Mississippi's Old
Capitol: Biography of a Building. Surely if a single
building embodies the history of Mississippi, it is the Old Capitol.
(Mississippians began calling it the "Old Capitol" only after
1903 when state government moved to the "New Capitol" several
blocks away. In its early years, the building with frontier republican
simplicity was called the "state house.") Even today among
Mississippians the Old Capitol is perhaps the most recognized structure in
the state, and it is regarded with a warmth and fond affection that is
denied to the more austere and imposing New Capitol. This is the
long-overdue biography of the building and the important events that
happened there.
